The New Media Literacies

Definition of The New Media Literacies:
"Are a set of skills that everyone needs to deal with our culture today. Skills
to function in the current media environment... with the Internet, cellphones...
and pace of life."
What are the skills that need to succeed? According to the video...
1Judgement: When you find information online and you need to decide whether that information is reliable or not.

2Negotiation: Knowing how to enter into different groups and spaces, and knowing how to understand what the different norms are.

3Appropriation: How to remix and sample content in a meaningful way.

4Play: The capacity to experiment with your surroundings as a form of problem solving.

5Transmedia navigation:
6Simulation
7Collective intelligence
8Performance
9Distributed cognition
10Visualization
11Multitasking

I wrote down the meanings of the few that they defined in the video so that I could understand what was meant. I think that if everyone possessed these skills, he or she would be prepared for a step into the world of technology, and would be able to think of ways how to creatively use media to enhance teaching methods. I feel that I am capable of learning more about each skill, because it is always changing. I feel comfortable saying that I currently posses all these skills except for Negotiation and Appropriation. If I was more involved in networking on the Internet or in general I believe that negotiation would be easier to achieve. Appropriation would be something that I could practice with. Would the skill of appropriation be something like using the program Audacity? Also, I have an idea of what Transmedia Navigation is, but I am not quite sure. I do believe that every person should possess at least half of the skills listed about to be able to keep along with this fast paced world.
